Description
Toned Gem 1828 Quarter, Ex: Benson, Garrett
1828 MS 65 PCGS. B-4, R.4. Ex: Garrett. The final date in the Large Diameter series of Bust quarters, this is one of only two MS 65 examples certified to date (12/98) with one piece finer (an MS 67). Unquestionably original with rich tonal qualities described in the Garrett catalog as: "light gray with mottled lilac, magenta and iridescent hues." The striking details are well brought up in all areas and both sides are perfectly centered. Thought by Bowers in the cataloging of the Garrett Collection to be a possible proof, the fields exhibit a noticeable glimmer when held beneath a light, but the effect is somewhat dampened by the layers of toning. From the Benson Collection.Sold by the Chapman brothers to T. Harrison Garrett, March 20, 1883; Garrett II (Bowers and Ruddy, 3/80), lot 642.
