Description

1831 Large Letters Quarter, MS64
B-5, Repunching at the 1s

1831 25C Large Letters, B-5, FS-301, R.3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Prooflike flash remains at the margins of the obverse and across nearly the entire reverse of this splendid, near-Gem Large Letters quarter. The first and last 1 in the date are each repunched over smaller 1s, with the underdigits easily observed. Deep blue toning at the rims yields to overall orange-gold patina, with strong mint luster shining through. The coin is boldly struck at the centers with the eagle razor-sharp. Slight weakness at the obverse stars, particularly on stars 1 through 7, is typical of the variety. Only a few tiny nicks are seen on the reverse, and they are of little consequence. Population (all varieties): 13 in 64, 5 finer (2/15).
