Lustrous 1831 B-5 Quarter, MS65
1831 25C Large Letters MS65 NGC. B-5, R.3. One of the three Large Letter variants out of the seven 1831 quarter die marriages. Repunching is observed in the date and various reverse features. According to Tompkins, in his Early United States Quarters (2008), Chief Engraver William Kneass experimented with the dies of 1831 in order to maximize the quality of strike for this first-year issue quarter. Modifications explored by Kneass included extensive reengraving of many details and accounts for the Small Letter and Large Letter variations on the reverse dies. The Large Letter issues--like the piece offered here--appear to be significantly scarcer than the Small Letter 1831 quarter variants.Rich luster dominates the untoned surfaces of this Gem small-sized Bust quarter. A few wispy abrasions on Liberty's cheek are likely all that preclude an even finer grade. Census: 23 in 65, 8 finer (3/09).
