Description

1831 MS 62 Deeply Prooflike. B-4b, R.1. At first glance one is tempted to think this coin may be a proof. Even through the deep gray-violet toning that covers both sides, the fields are brightly mirrored. However, upon close examination we believe this is not a proof striking for the following reasons: the coin was struck from the later, cracked state of the dies (crack from C2 to the stem), also it is not completely struck up on the peripheral stars and it shows some beveling on the rims. Nevertheless, an attractive and worthwhile mint state coin.
