Description
Prooflike 1831 Small Letters Quarter
1831 25C Small Letters MS 64 PCGS. B-2, R.1. This is a fascinating coin in that the surfaces present a bold prooflike finish. While the fields are deeply reflective and the devices are nicely frosted, there are several other features which prevent us from calling this a proof specimen. Small die cracks encircle the reverse periphery, and these suggest that the dies had advanced to a later state at the time that this coin was produced. The obverse stars are also softly defined, further evidence of die deterioration. To lessen the effects of the cracks and extend the life of the dies, Mint employees polished both the obverse and the reverse. The present coin was probably one of the first struck from the dies after they were polished, thus explaining the prooflike features. Nonetheless, the eye appeal of this coin is spectacular for the grade. Both sides are lightly overlaid in golden-gray patina and there are no bothersome abrasions. An appealing near-Gem that offers considerable insight into the minting process of the early 19th century.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23RW, PCGS# 5348, GSID# 5080)
