1833 B-1 Quarter, MS62
Late-State Dies

1833 25C B-1, R.2, MS62 PCGS. CAC. The rose-gold and gray centers cede to moderate aqua patina around the rims on each side, showing good luster and a few small abrasions on each side consistent with the grade.

Variety: B-1, R.2. The period following the denomination is sufficient to determine between the B-1 and B-2, the only two varieties known for the year, which share a common obverse die. Die State: The obverse shows "ear bar" clashes and die rust that is heavier near the rim. The reverse shows die rust or pitting around the denomination, between the lower two arrowheads, and around E(D) and STA.

Population Data (9/15): For the year, PCGS shows eight in this grade and 21 finer, while NGC shows seven and 34 in comparable grades.

Heritage Commentary: Besides the period in the denomination present on this variety, the B-1 can be distinguished from the B-2 (which lacks the period) by the three-line stripes in the reverse shield. The B-2 has two-line stripes, the only such reverse in the Bust quarter series.
