Description

Intriguing 1833 Quarter from the Eliasberg Collection

1833 25C MS 64 NGC. B-2, R.1. Ex: Eliasberg. Despite the overall low rarity estimate, this variety is quite rare when found as sharply struck as the present near-Gem. The boldly defined features show through the even, lavender-gray toning. Blushes of orange-russet and electric-blue iridescence are also noted in the protected areas. This coin has the added desirability of extensive doubling on the reverse. This interesting feature is most evident on the eagle's left (facing) claws and on certain letters in STATES OF. The reverse die is the only one in the Capped Bust quarter series to show two vertical lines in each shield stripe. All other reverses display three vertical lines per shield stripe.
From the Richard Doyle Collection.
Ex: John G. Mills Collection (S.H. and H. Chapman, 4/04); J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Sale (Bowers & Merena, 4/97), lot 1404, where it realized $2,530.
