    Description

    Gorgeous 1834 B-1 Quarter, MS65

1834 25C MS65 NGC. B-1, R.1. An intermediate die stage, per Steve Tompkins, with a perfect obverse die and A1 and A2 both filled. The 1834 quarter has a reported mintage of 286,000 pieces. Engraver William Kneass prepared the quarter dies for the year, with a possible assist from Christian Gobrecht. Two obverse and four reverse dies were combined to strike the five known varieties of this issue. The present coin is an example of the B-1 variety, characterized by the use of only two lines in the stripes of the shield. The B-1 type is the most available variety for this date, and probably comes second in the die emission sequence.
The present specimen features a sharp strike, with fine detail on all design elements. Attractive gray and lilac toning enhances the fields, with much original color and luster remaining in areas near the devices. This coin is an attractive example of an early quarter and would serve admirably in an advanced type set. Census: 10 in 65, 5 finer (2/09).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 23RZ, PCGS# 5353)
