Description
1836 B-3 Quarter, Toned MS64
Late Die States on Both Sides
1836 25C B-3, R.1, MS64 PCGS. Aqua, deep rose, and mauve
patina occupies the obverse more fully than the reverse on this
near-Gem, which shows similar colors on the reverse but with an
open, untoned silver area at the center. Multiple noticeable die
cracks appear on both sides, including one bisecting crack on the
obverse. Great eye appeal and a sharp strike are hallmarks of this
coin, despite the multiple interesting die cracks.Variety: B-3, R.1. Die State: Late on both sides, although possibly not absolutely as late as those described in Early Quarter Dollars. Major obverse cracks include a bisecting crack from the rim through L to the ear-curls-shoulder and back to the rim left of star 13. A second large crack runs from the rim to star 1 to the forward bust and below the clasp. Several small cracks appear in the date digits, some connecting to the rim. The reverse shows an arcing crack from left of the 2, up across the shield to the area of ICA where it joins other small cracks.
Population Data (9/15): For the year 1836, PCGS shows six in MS64 (one MS64+) with one MS65 and one MS67 finer. NGC reports 16 in MS64 and none finer. The paucity of certified varieties makes those data of little utility.
Heritage Commentary: Die cracks on early Mint coinage are certainly not an extraordinary circumstance, but pieces such as this, in what is nearly a terminal die state, are especially treasured by some collectors and numismatic researchers.
