Choice XF 1836 Bust Quarter, Rare B-4 Die Variety

1836 25C XF 45. B-4, Low R.7. The small 6 and the myriad die cracks confirm this coin as an example of this elusive die marriage. In the updated version of Browning's book The Early Quarter Dollars of the United States: 1796-1838, only eight survivors of this variety are reported with grades that range from VG to AU Cleaned. A single XF example, the Bergen specimen, is mentioned in this list, but we are unsure whether or not this is the same piece. The surfaces are undeniably original and neither side reveals any noteworthy distractions beneath the deep charcoal-cobalt toning. The wear is even and confined to only the highest points of the design. A significant opportunity for the early quarter specialist. (NGC ID# 23S3, PCGS# 5355)
