1837 Quarter, MS65
Browning-2, Scarce This Fine
1837 25C B-2, R.1, MS65 NGC. Although readily available in
lesser grades, the B-2 variety is challenging to obtain in Gem
Uncirculated condition. This is a frosty, lightly toned example
with subtle reddish-brown patina that deepens at the margins, where
a speckling of bluish-gray color awaits. Even on Gem or finer
examples, the B-2 variety shows minor weakness at the upper-left
stars and at the topmost cap fold. All else is sharp on this MS65
coin including the eagle's talons, which are better defined than
often seen even at this high grade. Subtle die clashing exists on
both sides, most visible at the edges of Liberty's portrait and
beneath the eagle's wings. The 252,400-piece mintage is the
second-lowest among the 1830s Capped Bust dates. NGC reports less
than two dozen 1837 examples in Gem or finer conditions. NGC Census
