Late-State Dies
Condition Census Coin

1837 25C B-4, R.3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. The surfaces on this lovely near-Gem 1837 quarter are quite well-struck and show attractive rose-gray patina with traces of olive-brown clustered around the rims. Some silver area remains in the central reverse. Both the strike and preservation are excellent on this coin, which shows late-state die cracks on both sides. There are no abrasions of note.

Variety: B-4, R.3. The left edge of the curl aligns with the right side of the 7. The reverse shows the branch tip even with the C in the denomination. Die State: Late, showing an long, fairly straight die crack that bisects the obverse, from the lower rim left of the date and right of star 1, diagonally upward through the bust, field, cheek, throat, cheek, curls, to the cap and back to the rim. The reverse shows a crack from D STATE to the rim.

Population Data (9/15): This piece is tied for the finest of the variety, according to the Condition Census in Early Quarter Dollars.

Heritage Commentary: The B-4 variety is a median one in terms of rarity among the five known die marriages for 1837, neither common nor rare. The reverse die crack is unsurprising, given that this doughty die was used earlier to strike Bust quarters in 1835 (B-8) and 1836 (B-1, B-5) before its use for the 1837 B-1, B-3, and this variety,.
