1837 B-4 Quarter Dollar, MS64
Possible Finest Late Die State Piece
From the Gardner Collection

1837 25C B-4, R.3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. The obverse has a prominent bisecting die crack from the border at 7 o'clock through the drapery and bust to Liberty's throat, the E in LIBERTY, the hair, cap, and the border at 1 o'clock. The reverse has a die crack grazing the upper curve of the D, then curving through STATE. The late die state examples are slightly scarcer than early state pieces. This pristine quarter has original light gold surfaces with brilliant luster. Hints of blue toning appear on the reverse. No finer examples are reported in Steve Tompkins' Condition Census, nor in the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Condition Census. Of the four Choice Mint State examples in those lists, this piece is the only late die state example. One finer early die state example graded MS65 PCGS appeared in our March 2016 Dallas Signature sale.
