1837 25C MS63+ PCGS. B-5, R.5. The Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census of Capped Bust quarters, published in Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint (Rory Rea, Dr. Glenn Peterson, Bradley Karoleff, and John Kovach, Jr.), records just four Mint State examples of 1837 B-5, the second rarest variety of the year. Those four pieces, from finest to fourth finest, include the double struck Eliasberg specimen, the Polis specimen from Bowers and Merena's June 1991 sale, the Norweb specimen, and the plate coin in the above mentioned reference. The present specimen is a fifth Mint State example of the variety.
Both sides are fully brilliant with white silver surfaces and satiny luster, the fields showing noticeable reflectivity. A small crescent-shaped mark in the left obverse field will identify this piece to future researchers. The strike is nearly identical to other Census level examples of the variety, with stars 1 through 5, 7, and 13 flat, the others sharp. Here is an exceptional opportunity for the advanced variety specialist to add the B-5, or upgrade a lower quality example.(Registry values: P1)
