1838 B-1 Quarter, MS64
End of the Capped Bust Type
1838 25C B-1, R.1, MS64 NGC. The final Capped Bust date
before replacement by the Seated type. Reportedly, a single die
pair (B-1) was used to coin the entire 366,000-piece mintage --
perhaps, some of those coins were actually dated 1837. The softly
lustrous obverse has a tan-brown and silver-gray center framed by
forest-green, blue, and reddish-lilac. The reverse is flashy and
lightly toned with peripheral peach patina. A well preserved and
satiny near-Gem, boldly struck and appealing. Census: 18 in 64, 6
finer (10/14).Ex: New York Signature (Heritage, 7/2002), lot 7790; Fred Miller Collection (Heritage, 3/2004), lot 5631.
