1838 B-1 Quarter, MS64
End of the Capped Bust Type
1838 25C B-1, R.1, MS64 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 1/1. The
final Capped Bust date before replacement by the Seated type.
Reportedly, a single die pair (B-1) was used to coin the entire
366,000-piece mintage -- perhaps, some of those coins were actually
dated 1837. The softly lustrous obverse has a tan-brown and
silver-gray center framed by forest-green, blue, and reddish-lilac.
The reverse is flashy and lightly toned with peripheral peach
patina. A well-preserved and satiny near-Gem, boldly struck and
appealing. Population: 3 in 64, 1 finer (6/17).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23S5, Variety PCGS# 39015, Base PCGS# 5357, GSID# 393250)
