1838 B-1 Capped Bust Quarter, MS65
Transitional Year
1838 25C B-1, R.1, MS65 PCGS. Die State b with clash marks
on the obverse and die cracks on both sides. This is the
transitional year for quarter dollars, the last year of the Capped
Bust design and the first year of the Liberty Seated type. While
Mint State pieces are plentiful, Gems are rare. Less than 10 MS65
or finer examples are known, and only two of those are clearly
finer than the present example. This satin Gem combines
golden-brown and pale blue toning with subdued luster on the
obverse and brilliant luster on the reverse. Population: 7 in 65, 1
finer (6/15).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 23S5, Variety PCGS# 39015, Base PCGS# 5357, GSID# 393250)
