Description

Pristine 1838 B-1 Bust Quarter, MS66

1838 25C MS66 NGC. B-1, R.1. The year 1838 saw the transition from the Capped Bust, Small Size quarter to Christian Gobrecht's Seated Liberty design, which premiered on half dimes and dimes in 1837. Lilac and apricot fill the centers, while the margins are adorned with blue-green patina. This intricately struck Premium Gem has remarkably clean surfaces, and the satin luster is easily seen through the attractive toning. An outstanding final-year type coin. Although 366,000 pieces are reported to have been produced, only one die pair is known, which suggests that either the dies were unusually hardy, or, more likely, some of the reported delivery may have been dated 1837. Census: 3 in 66, 0 finer (4/09).
Ex: Heritage (2/2005), lot 6528.
