1838 Capped Bust Quarter, B-1, MS67
Single-Finest Certified Example

1838 25C MS67 NGC. B-1, R.1. A substantial mintage of
366,000 Capped Bust quarters was accomplished in 1838, with only a
single die variety known for the date. The Capped Bust design was
retired partway through 1838 in favor of Christian Gobrecht's
beautiful Seated Liberty motif, which began production on September
29th of that year. The mintage of Capped Bust quarters was large
enough to make the issue reasonably available in today's market,
despite the shortened period of production.It is remarkable that a single pair of dies was durable enough to strike such a large number of coins. By 1838, the Mint was accustomed to "hubbing" working dies from a nearly complete hub. Steve Tompkins suggests that there may have been more than one pair of dies used in the production run, but the dies were only distinguishable by minor variations in the placement of the last digit in the date. It is possible that sharp-eyed collectors will discover some new sub-varieties of this issue with more extensive study.
Remarkable reddish-gold, electric-blue, pale gold, and reddish-purple iridescence provides a visual feast over both sides of this exceptional Superb Gem. The coin's strike definition is impressive and nearly full on all elements except for some of the obverse stars. An intensely lustrous, impeccably preserved Capped Bust quarter with seemingly unimprovable eye appeal. This piece is the single-finest certified example at either of the leading grading services and we expect spirited competition from series specialists and Registry Set enthusiasts when this lot is called.
