Description

Uncertified 1900 Indian Cent, Struck on a Gold Planchet, AU 55. 4.35 grams. Plain Edge.17.8 vertical x 18.1 horizontal diameters. Presumably struck on a quarter eagle planchet, the coin is slightly off-center missing part of the denticles on the right side of both obverse and reverse. Three of these off-metal strikings are known for this date and at least one is known for 1907. Another 1900 gold cent was offered in the 1991 ANA Sale (B&M, 8/91), lot 4103. Both pieces were obviously struck from the same dies as they both show shift double striking on the obverse, multiple recuttings on the C in CENT, and a patch of die rust on the reverse below C(EN)T.
Such off-metal strikings are also known for a 1915 cent struck in gold and a Panama-Pacific half dollar struck in the same metal. It has been speculated that these items were produced by George T. Morgan, who allegedly had a penchant for making "fancy pieces." This dazzling piece displays deep, rich gold surfaces and a very strong strike on the design details. There is just a whisper of rub, no doubt from curious viewers over the years who just could not resist the temptation to touch such an unusual mint product. A spectacular coin that has few peers for rarity, beauty, and sheer fascination. (PCGS# 10369)
