Description

1837 Feuchtwanger Three-Cent VF 20. Low-117. Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger's metal was really a variant of German silver containing nickel, copper, and some zinc. He lobbied Congress as early as 1837 to substitute his alloy for copper in coinage and produced these one and three-cent coins as trial pieces. The three-cent pieces are much scarcer than the one-cent coins. The surfaces show signs of extensive wear, but there are no bothersome marks on either side. A medium gray patina surrounds the devices with the original light gray-silver color of the alloy showing on the highpoints of the design. Listed in the 1993 Guide Book on page 284. (NGC ID# 2BGK, PCGS# 10370)
