Description

1853 Round Liberty Quarter, MS62
Rare Large Date BG-208

1853 25C Liberty Round 25 Cents, BG-208, R.7, MS62 PCGS. A rare die marriage attributed to Joseph Bros. of San Francisco. The BG-208 and BG-212 were the only uses for the reverse die, which features a dual kidney-shaped wreath-bow and a large upward-slanting date. BG-208 has ten obverse stars while BG-212 has the expected 13 stars. This example has deep violet-red toning across the open fields, while the initial yellow-gold color clings to the high points, stars, and letters. Just ten examples have been certified by NGC and PCGS combined, which likely includes a few duplicate submissions. Population: 4 in 62, 1 finer (3/18).
