Description

    1853 Octagonal Fifty Cents, MS62
    BG-302, 'Peacock' Reverse

1853 50C Peacock Reverse 50 Cents, BG-302, Low R.4, MS62 NGC. The popular "Peacock" reverse, with a burst of rays behind the eagle that resemble the tailfeathers of a peacock; the eagle's real tailfeathers are seen below. This is the more plentiful of the two varieties that employ this reverse, identified by the F.D. positioned behind the obverse portrait, rather than below, as is seen on BG-303. This piece is well-struck, but with minor planchet laminations visible in the left reverse field. Both sides show bright yellow-gold color. Produced by Frontier, Deviercy, & Co. Census: 4 in 62, 6 finer (3/15).
