Description

    1853 Octagonal Half Dollar, AU58
    Extremely Rare BG-303, "Peacock" Reverse

1853 50C Peacock Reverse 50 Cents, BG-303, Low R.7, AU58 NGC. The "Peacock" reverse octagonal half dollar by Frontier, Deviercy, & Co. is almost always represented by the BG-302 variety, and it is a marquee event for the fractional gold specialist when a BG-303 example is offered. It is doubtful if many more than a dozen pieces are known. An example in Henry Chapman's 1907 sale of the Stickney Collection was described as "Very Fine. Ring soldered to edge. Very Rare," and realized $1.75 -- a significant price for a "soldered" coin in that period. This nearly Uncirculated example shows deep, original patination in shades of olive, brown, violet, and gold. The eagle's head is weakly struck, as usual, while noticeable semiprooflike mirroring dominates the recesses. Census: 2 in 58, 1 finer (4/15). (NGC ID# 2BJ8, PCGS# 10423)
