    Description

Finest Certified BG-411 1853 Peacock Half Dollar

1853 50C Peacock Reverse 50 Cents, BG-411, R.7, MS63 PCGS. The eagle's left (facing) wingtip is aligned with the H in HALF, the arrow points to a repunched D in DOL, and the bust truncation is centered between stars. Most of the stars are repunched. A slender diagonal die crack (as made) travels along the cheek. This is a radiant canary-gold piece with an exquisite strike and only the most trivial slide marks in the fields. The recently released Second Edition of the standard Breen-Gillio reference lists eight known survivors, one of which was stolen in a 1993 burglary and has not surfaced since. PCGS has certified only four pieces in all grades for this desirable Period One variety, and this is the single highest graded example. The Jay Roe Collection specimen is certified as AU55. (#10447) (NGC ID# 2BJX, PCGS# 10447)
