Description

    Very Rare 1854 'Humbert Reverse'
    Octagonal Gold Dollar, BG-534, AU55

1854 $1 Large Eagle Octagonal 1 Dollar, BG-534, High R.6, AU55 PCGS. The eagle design on the reverse of this very rare variety suggests the 1851-52 U.S. Assay Office/Humbert octagonal fifty dollar gold pieces, even though the later coins have no official sanction. The Jay Roe Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/2003, lot 133) contained an AU58 PCGS example, headlined as the "Humbert Reverse," a coin that was also used as the plate coin for the second edition of the Breen-Gillio reference. Both sides of this lightly worn piece show a prevailing antique-gold color, with excellent detail remaining on the eagle reverse. PCGS has seen only four submissions in Mint State. Population: 2 in 55, 5 finer [finest a single MS63] (12/11). (NGC ID# 2BM2, PCGS# 10511)
