Description

    1856 Octagonal BG-512 Dollar, MS64
    Extremely Rare, Finest at NGC

1856 $1 Liberty Octagonal 1 Dollar, BG-512, Low R.7, MS64 NGC. A single gold dollar variety, BG-512, bears the 1856 date, including both round and octagonal types. The coins were struck by Frontier, Deviercy, & Co. from heavily rusted dies, evident on both sides of this amazing near-Gem survivor. The cataloger of the Jay Roe Collection noted that many BG-512 gold dollars were "gold-plated over a baser gold core ... ." This piece shows minor loss of plating on the chin, neck, lower hair curls, and reverse beads. Rich yellow and khaki-gold hues color the fields, contrasting against lemon-gold motifs. This is only the third time we have handled an example of this variety in 22 years, the last time being in 1996. It is also the finest coin we have handled by a wide margin: eight grade points. A spectacular representative for the advanced California fractional gold enthusiast. Census: 1 in 64, 0 finer (11/15).

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
