Description

    1859 Octagonal Gold Dollar, MS61
BG-1101, Only Three Coins Believed Extant

1859 $1 Liberty Octagonal 1 Dollar, BG-1101, Low R.8, MS61 NGC. BG-1101 is easily recognizable as the only gold dollar dated 1859, regardless of type. Examples are extremely rare, and the issue is accordingly rated Low R.8. CoinFacts estimates three BG-1101 octagonal gold dollars survive. This is the only example recorded at NGC, while PCGS shows three grading events in AU55, AU58, and MS62 (11/15). Previous auction appearances include an XF45 example from the Lee Collection (Superior, 9/1988), lot 451, and the Jay Roe Collection coin: Comstock-Gunther Collections (Thomas Elder, 1/1935), lot 1103; Jascha Heifetz Sale (Superior, 1/1989), lot 387; Jay Roe Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/2003), lot 545. This MS61 coin fails to match either of the two examples in those sales. Each side showcases partly reflective olive-gold fields and well-struck, lightly frosted motifs. Scattered abrasions are inconsequential. A premium bid will almost certainly be required to procure this extremely rare offering.
