    Description

    1871 Octagonal Quarter, MS62
    Extremely Rare BG-718A

1871 25C Liberty Octagonal 25 Cents, BG-718A, R.8, MS62 PCGS. An extremely rare Frontier, Deviercy & Co. variety, unlisted in the 1983 first edition of Breen-Gillio. The 2003 second edition called it unique, since only the Jay Roe specimen was confirmed at that time. The obverse is shared with BG-718, but the reverse differs, as it lacks wreath stems and has a different bow and berry arrangement. The AR in DOLLAR are defective, and the first 1 in the date is awkwardly repunched.

We know of only four examples of BG-718A:
    1. MS64+ PCGS.
Heritage, 1/2012, lot 6880. The only example without a heavy reverse die crack near 9 o'clock.
    2. MS64 PCGS.
Discovery coin. Robert B. Leece, 8/1991; Jay Roe Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/2003), lot 162. Toned between stars 1 and 2.
    3. MS62 PCGS.
The present coin. Much nicer than implied by its conservatively assessed grade. Readily identified by rich and pleasing ruby-red and sea-green toning throughout both sides.
    4. MS62 PCGS.
Ira & Larry Goldberg, 9/2013. Untoned. Minor field scratch above the AR in DOLLAR.
