    Description

Apparently the Finest Known 1871 BG-719 Rarity 7 Gold Quarter Dollar

1871 25C Liberty Octagonal 25 Cents, BG-719, R.7, MS65 PCGS. Die State II. Probably the finest known. An extremely rare die pairing which is seldom seen or offered. Frosty mint luster in the fields and generally attractive. The surfaces are clean, with no disturbances aside from minute hairlines. The present coin is a middle die state which is defined as having three minor die cracks on the reverse, all on the upper right from the rim to the wreath and clash marks in the center of the reverse. Examination will also confirm stress cracks on Liberty's neck, cheek and crown. In the terminal die state, this cracks to the wreath form a cud.
There are perhaps six to 10 known of this issue. In the recent update of the Breen-Gillio California Pioneer Fractional Gold the authors enumerate nine examples, with possible duplication in that list. The present coin may have been a recently graded example, as no MS65 specimens are noted. No examples have been graded by NGC, and a mere six examples are listed in the PCGS Population Report with the present coin alone as the sole MS65, with none seen finer. For the specialist, the present coin would make a welcome addition to an advanced collection. (NGC ID# 2BMY, PCGS# 10546)
