Description

1872 Round Indian Head Dollar, MS62
    Rare BG-1208, TOKEN Reverse

1872 $1 Indian Round Dollar, BG-1208, Low R.6, MS62 NGC. A rare round dollar variety made by Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig of San Francisco, unique with the word TOKEN on the reverse; this inscription was to avoid legal infractions in the aftermath of the Hershfield and Mitchell arrests. Struck with pure gold plating over an 18 karat core (approximately 70% gold, 9% silver, and 21% copper). Described in Henry Chapman's June 1907 sale of the Stickney Collection as "Very Rare," where a holed example realized $1.50. This problem-free Mint State piece shows deep straw-gold patina over prooflike fields. Trivial striking weakness is noted in the extreme centers, as always on this issue. Census: 1 in 62, 0 finer (4/15). (NGC ID# 2C47, PCGS# 10953)
