Description

    1872 Washington Round Quarter, MS64
    Baker-A504, BG-818

1872 25C Washington Round 25 Cents, Baker-A504, BG-818, Low R.4, MS64 PCGS. George Washington was an unlikely subject for California small denomination gold issuers, since he died a half-century before gold was discovered in what became the Golden State. BG-818 is the only Breen-Gillio Washington round quarter variety, although three octagonal quarter Washington varieties are known (BG-722 through BG-724), along with two BG-unlisted octagonal 1/4 charm varieties (Baker-504 and 504A) and one BG-unlisted octagonal 1/2 charm (Baker-505), all dated 1872. The present canary-gold BG-818 quarter is well preserved despite a slight lamination below the A in CAL. Population: 34 in 64, 31 finer (7/16). (NGC ID# 2BT9, PCGS# 10679)
