    Description

    1876 Indian Octagonal Quarter
    MS67 Deep Prooflike
    Very Rare BG-799B, Three Known

1876 25C Indian Octagonal 25 Cents, BG-799B, R.8, MS67 Deep Prooflike NGC. On August 10, 1876, San Francisco jeweler Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig, was arrested by Secret Service agent Henry F. Fineglass. Fineglass seized hundreds of California fractional gold pieces, which were ultimately melted. Perhaps the incident explains the great rarity of BG-799B, a Mohrig issue. We know of only three examples, the present piece and two graded by PCGS, respectively as MS63 and MS65. This well struck sun-gold Superb Gem has mirrored fields and a pristine appearance. A small roundish strike-through on the jaw serves as an identifier. (Variety PCGS# 910628, Base PCGS# 10628)
