Description

    1876 Octagonal Indian Quarter Dollar
    BG-799GG, MS65 Prooflike
Only Two Examples of the Variety Known

1876 25C Octagonal Indian Quarter Dollar, MS65 Prooflike NGC. BG-799GG, R.8. Produced by Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig, unlisted by Breen and Gillio. This variety was discovered by cataloger Brian Koller in 2009, and exhibits the obverse of the BG-799A through BG-799D varieties, paired with a previously unknown reverse die. Koller describes the reverse diagnostics in the May 18, 2009, Coin World article:

"The new variety reverse has a large fraction, similar to the fraction found on the BG-799A and BG-799B varieties ... The legend DOLLAR has large letters, like BG-799B but not BG-799A. The D and R in DOLLAR on the new variety both touch a leaf, unlike the other No CAL octagonal quarter reverse dies by the maker ... A diagonal die crack descends from the right foot of the 1 in the fraction, and a second, extremely faint die crack connects the second L in DOLLAR to the loop of the bow. A horizontal die scratch passes through the D in DOLLAR. The A in DOLLAR is defective, missing a portion of its upper left side."

The coin here offered is not the discovery coin, but is the only other known example of the variety. Remarkably deep mirroring in the fields accents razor-sharp, softly frosted devices, delivering substantial cameo contrast. A seemingly unblemished Gem example of this incredibly rare variety. Struck with a 90 degree die rotation. (PCGS# 410508)
