Description

    1878/6 Octagonal Half Dollar, MS66
    BG-952, Sole Finest Certified

1878/6 50C Indian Octagonal 50 Cents, BG-952, High R.5, MS66 PCGS. A rare octagonal half dollar variety made by Christopher Ferdinand Mohrig of San Francisco. An 1876 obverse die was reworked with 1878 date, and was employed for the 1878 issue. This is the only known variety of the 1878 octagonal half, and is usually seen with deep prooflike fields, as is the case with this Premium Gem. Heavy die polishing has effaced portions of the date numerals, though the date remains readable. Slight striking weakness is noted at the centers, as is usual for this variety. Struck with a 90 degree die rotation, and showing rich orange-gold color. Housed in an old green label holder, this piece is the sole finest of just 28 examples at PCGS (10/14). (NGC ID# 2BXL, PCGS# 10810)
