Description

(1900) Lesher Referendum Dollar Life Saving Medal XF 45. Type of Zerbe-2. 35 mm. Engraved by Herman Otto. The obverse shows the Pike's Peak silver mine motif, however, the A.B. Bumstead commodity/exchange inscription has been expertly planed off without disturbing any of the denticles, yet there is no trace of the original lettering. The newly engraved description reads LIFE SAVING MEDAL/FOR YEN/FROM CREW OF 1900, in three lines, the lowest line curved. A few curlicues and ornaments highlight the inscription in typical turn-of-the-century "show boat" style. The reverse is normal for the type. R This unique piece is the only known example of a Lesher dollar used as a life saving or any other kind of medal, however, it is not the only unique "imprint." Dr. Philip W. Whiteley first recorded two imprint-style dollars engraved for H. Stein, Canon City clothier; and H.H. Rosser, Victor stationer. This life saving piece plainly is a newly discovered third unique Lesher imprint. It shows the lightest wear and a few tiny contact marks that are commensurate with the grade of this toned octagon. The coin shows the "secret marks" found on all other normal Lesher pieces: tiny pits where the mountains join the left dentils and another on the lowest rim.The weight of 476.85 grains (30.9 grams) may be the result of metal loss in preparing the obverse for its engraved inscription. An important and previously unpublished addition to the Lesher series. (PCGS# 10365)
