Description

1909 Hudson-Fulton Dollar in Bronze, A Uniface Striking on a 1909 Lincoln Cent, MS 60. Obverse Die of HK-371/373, DeLorey-77a. A unique and fascinating striking of the obverse die for Thomas Elder's gold dollar-sized Hendrik Hudson Daalder, as cataloged by Thomas K. DeLorey in the July, 1980 issue of "The Numismatist." This die was used to strike bronze, then silver, and finally gold medals, being later replaced with a new obverse die for the aluminum strikings because of die cracks. The cracked die was then pressed on a small number of U.S. and foreign coins while they were resting on a soft copper or brass plate. The plate absorbed an impression of an earlier host coin, an El Salvador 1889-H 1 centavo, and transferred part of the design back onto the Lincoln cent. Unique or nearly so; and a 1909 Robert Fulton Gold Dollar PR 63. DeLorey-76, HK-375. Like the Hudson daalder above, designed by Frank Higgins with dies by Jules Edouard Roine and struck by Medallic Art Co. for Thomas Elder. A bold view of Fulton's steamboat "The Clermont" dominates this well-designed reverse. Perhaps as many as 75 pieces were struck in gold. Rarely seen in this metal. Pleasing matte surfaces with a few minor shiny spots on the highpoints of the design.
