    Description

1939 Elder Lincoln Token, AU 55. DeLorey-49, HK-493. 1.84 grams. The obverse has Lincoln's bust as seen on Elder's 1910 issue. The reverse has A TOKEN and nine stars enclosed by a laurel wreath. One of 100 satin-finish pieces struck as Elder's contribution to the New York World's Fair numismatics by Medallic Art Co. in 10-carat gold after President Roosevelt's 1933 gold surrender order. Thinner planchet than the 1927 issue but this displays a finer fabric; and a 1910/1927 Mule of Elder's Lincoln Tokens, MS 63. 2.12 grams. Unlisted in DeLorey. This combination of two Lincoln obverses was unknown to Elder specialist Thomas K. DeLorey and does not appear in his definitive "Thomas L. Elder, A Catalogue of His Tokens and Medals," (The Numismatist, June 1980). The 1910 design by medalist Jules Edouard Roine contrasts with the somewhat similar, anonymous bust type of 1927. Struck in 18-carat gold, probably unique. The gilt is fully intact and as an identifying mark there is a small spot between the back of Lincoln's head and the first L in LINCOLN on the "1910" side with a die crack just above.
