Description

Andrew Jackson Peace Medal. Copper. 75.70 mm. Uncirculated. Even golden-tan color, this is a sharply defined specimen from dies engraved by Moritz Furst (obverse) and John Reich (reverse). Struck from the original dies, the obverse shows faint evidence of die rust. A pleasing example of this large sized Jackson peace medal. Ex: Julian Leidman Collection (B&M, 4/86), lot 4369, flip included. Major General Zachary Taylor Medal. Copper. 90 mm. MI-24. A choice About Uncirculated example with a lovely reddish-brown finish. From dies engraved by Charles Cushing Wright and one of about 176 pieces struck. The obverse shows Taylor facing right with crossed oak and laurel branches below. The reverse is an aerial view of the battle of Buena Vista, February 22 and 23, 1847 within entwined snakes that represent the two opposing armies. The battle scene is elaborately detailed and truly a wonder to behold. Ex: Julian Leidman Collection (B&M, 4/86), lot 4247, flip accompanies. Millard Fillmore Medal. Copper. 63 mm. 2245.9 grains. About Uncirculated. Julian IP-31. Struck from the original obverse and reverse dies, showing doubling on Willson's name on the lower reverse. A later striking as evidenced by the die crack across the Indian's leg and the presence of some die rust. There are two small parallel marks on Fillmore's lower neck that serve as identifiers. Ex: Dreyfuss Collection (B&M, 4/86), lot 5163, flip accompanies. Earlier from the Kessler-Spangenberger Collection (NASCA, 4/81), lot 1622.
