    Description

Wedgewood Slave Medallion (1785-90). Black slave on a white jasper background. 1 3/16" vertical oval, a first period piece and therefore lacking the Wedgewood imprint on the back. An excellent example with a small chip on the reverse edge that does not harm the appearance of the front. The edge is grooved to facilitate hanging around the neck. A number of these pieces were forwarded to Ben Franklin by Wedgewood, both abolitionists, to be given to by Franklin to his friends. An original, found in the Philadelphia area and sold to the consignor by Seal Simon in the late 1960s; Wedgewood Slave Medallion, circa 1820. Chocolate brown figure on white jasper background with Wedgewood imprint on back. 1 1/8" vertical oval. Smooth edge. There are two small nicks on the reverse that do not affect the appearance from the front. The fields are slightly darkened, probably from handling. Also found in the Philadelphia area and sold by Seal Simon, likely from the small hoard sent to Benjamin Franklin by Wedgewood. A rare item; Wedgewood Slave Medallion Pattern, circa 1820. Entirely executed in black basalt. 1 1/2" vertical oval, smooth edged, with Wedgewood imprint on the back. The obverse shows evidence of careless molding and undercutting. Nevertheless, as far as we can tell, a unique item and sure to bring a strong price. Also purchased from Philadelphia dealer, Seal Simon, in the late 1960s; Wedgewood Slave Medallion, a first period (and therefore unmarked) original. The figure of the slave is white and the background a muddy yellow. Mounted in an eight-sided broach with small corners. 1 3/4" x 1 1/8." There is a small piece out of the back of the slave that gives him a sway back appearance. Purchased from Wedgewood dealer Charles B. Smith in February 1967; and a Wedgewood Slave Medallion, circa 1820, with Wedgewood imprint on back. Vertical oval, 1/18." Again, with the familiar theme of the kneeling slave in chains as the central motif with the legend AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER? Black figure on white jasper background. Showing evidence of a bit more handling than the other medallions--there is a scratch in the left field and a shallow nick out of the edge at 7 o'clock. The reverse has a number of small cuts and abrasions. Purchased from London dealer Lobel in the late 1960s.
