    Description

Abolition Medal. 1834, white metal, 40.5 mm., proof with evidence of some light handling, a couple of obverse digs, and slightly bent. The obverse shows William IV seated with several prominent lords around and the inscription below I ADVOCATE THIS BILL AS A MEASURE OF HUMANITY. On the reverse are seven newly liberated slaves joyously dancing around a palmetto tree with the exergual inscription SLAVERY ABOLISHED BY GREAT BRITAIN 1834. Rare and valuable, a bronze medal of this type brought $484 in the Russell Patterson Sale (B&M, 3/85); Abolition Medal. Same design as above but struck in bronze, 41 mm. A pleasing reddish-brown patina with no mentionable surface defects. A rare and valuable anti-slavery medal in top condition; and an Abolition Medal. A third example of this type, and the second in bronze. 41 mm. There is slight rubbing on the highpoints of the design making this an AU piece. Light reddish-brown color with a couple of reverse carbon spots.
