    Description

Slavery Items of Questionable Origin. The following items we offer for sale as one lot, but we cannot guarantee that they are as represented. The identity of these items was related to the consignor many years ago by noted numismatist Ray Byrne, but he was unable to ever get a second opinion to corroborate Bynes' attributions. We leave the question of identity to the purchaser of the lot. Included are: Undated Tennessee slave tag, brass, 35 mm., VF with light patina and holed at the top for suspension; undated Ceylon slave token, 31 mm., Fine-VF and holed at the top for suspension, apparently for use as a tag in the St. Sebastian Mills and counterstamped with the number 81 on the reverse; another St. Sebastian tag, same grade, counterstamped with 62 on the reverse; undated Underground Railway pass, 19 mm., Fine and made from a cut down Large cent exposing the head of Liberty only on the obverse; another as above but the date 1851 can be made out, 22 mm., Fine with large punch covering the eye of Liberty; and another, undated, 19 mm. VF.
