    Description

1853 50C Arms of California 50 Cents, BG-435, Low R.5 -- Plugged -- NCS. AU Details. BG-435 ranks among the most famous die marriages of the entire California fractional gold series, as it is the sole variety that imitates the Great Seal of California, a design then only four years old. As if to make the variety yet more desirable to collectors, the reverse copies the eagle, ribbon, shield, and branch motif from the obverse of the Humbert fifty dollar slugs. BG-435 is the first and last of nine varieties presented on the cover of the 2003 Jay Roe catalog. The present apricot-gold example is slightly subdued but lacks noticeable marks. A lens reveals repairs near 12 o'clock on the obverse and 6 o'clock on the reverse.
