Description

1853 Liberty Octagonal Half, AU58
Rare BG-303 'Peacock' Variety

1853 50C Peacock Reverse 50 Cents, BG-303, Low R.7, AU58 PCGS. Frontier, Deviercy & Co. struck two varieties of "Peacock" octagonal halves. The scarce BG-302 has the FD initials below the hairbun, and the rare BG-303 places the FD above the date. Fractional gold collectors are aware that the bird is actually an eagle adorned with glory rays, but the iconic type nonetheless commands a lofty premium. This example is graded AU58 by PCGS, but although the high point strike is incomplete, no wear is apparent and the apricot-gold fields are radiant and unblemished. Population: 1 in 58, 3 finer (3/18).
