Description

Lovely, High Grade (MS63) 1852-3 Narrow Head Quarter
Round Liberty Head, BG-201, High R.7

Undated 25C Liberty Round 25 Cents, BG-201, High R.7, MS63 PCGS. This is a part of a string of controversial 1852-3 Narrow Head quarters. Generally attributed to Joseph Brothers, but there is no clear indication that these were made by that company or Frontier, Deviercy & Co. Either the BG-201 or 202 were referred to in the Sacramento Daily Union on April 29, 1853 as having "lately" appeared in circulation. The BG reference notes that this variety was discovered by Kenneth W. Lee before 1970. The obverse stars are from a punch with one broken point, and many of the stars are double punched. BG lists six coins, ranging from MS63 to a plugged (and presumably circulated) piece. Of those pieces listed, this is most likely the # 2 piece, only identified as "Another coin certified by PCGS as MS-63." The surfaces are bright yellow-gold with semiprooflikeness on the obverse only. Identifiable by an irregular planchet flake out of the obverse near the rim at 4 o'clock. The Jay Roe specimen graded MS62 and brought $9775 in Bowers' 2003 sale of his collection. (NGC ID# 2BGX, PCGS# 10386)
