Description
Newfoundland. Victoria Pattern Specimen 20 Cents 1865, London mint, NF-13, SP65 PCGS. Plain Edge - Coin Alignment. A stunning, dramatically cameoed beauty with surfaces that are free from all but a tiny wisp of tone on the reverse and fields that showcase seemingly endless mirrors. Heavily die polish lines (as made), are present in both the obverse and reverse fields and should not be confused with post-strike handling, of which there is very little. The design, similar to the circulating type, only varies noticeably on the reverse where the peripheral arches are outlined so as to embolden their appearance with an extra line also present just inside the dentilation that circles the design. Like most of the pattern and specimen issues from this period, this piece is very rare; only 3 examples appear in the PCGS census with one in the NGC census. The present example, actually unaccounted for in the PCGS census, and likely integrated into the Specimen tally for the issue, would actually represent the single finest known in the PCGS census if properly represented. Another significant offering from this amazing collection! From The Prager Collection of Canadian Specimen Coins
