Description

The Mystifying 1892 Specimen 10 Cents

Victoria Specimen 10 Cents 1892 SP60 PCGS, Royal mint, KM3. Small "9" variety. An extremely rare specimen date, produced for unknown reasons, with the Charlton reference listing only specimen strikes for the 10 and 25 cent denominations of the year. Our search for information yields little more, as there are no archived auction records for this or the 25 cent piece in specimen format, with the present coin being the only example certified by either service. Lightly lacquered at the mint, the surfaces remain essentially free of tone, with only the light overcoat adding a touch of rainbow iridescence when rotated beneath a light. Moderate handing defines the grade, but despite it, the overall appearance remains rather decent. All considered, a possible once-in-a-lifetime chance to own what must be considered one of Victoria's most elusive presentation issues.
