Description

New Brunswick, 1871 20 Cent Pattern NB-8 Reeded Edge, SPECIMEN 60 PCGS. NB-8, Reeded Edge, Lacquered, Proof 60 ICCS. White centers with charcoal-gray and gold peripheral toning and noticeable abrasions. It is possible that some of the abrasions are merely in the lacquer, but a few appear to be deep enough to have affected the surfaces. The pattern coins of New Brunswick dated 1870, 1871 and 1875 have long puzzled numismatists and historians alike. New Brunswick became part of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. Most speculate the coins were struck for display purposes only. There was no intention to strike regular issue New Brunswick coins in this period. These patterns were the most recent coins struck for a participating province in the new union. The patterns from this period are both rare and popular. One of only two Specimens certified by PCGS.
