The Only Example of Breton 1000 in Private Hands

SHIPS COLONIES & COMMERCE 1/2 Penny Token ND, Breton-1000 VF30 Brown NGC, Br-1000, PE-10-5B, Lees-5B (long ship), 5.94 gm. Pleasing medium brown color.  The only unusual feature worth recording is an unusual, almost microscopic, "cloth-like" texture to the surfaces.  However, NGC has certified this piece genuine, and it is therefore guaranteed.

Breton-1000, with its unique long ship lacking a poop deck, is the rarest and most celebrated variety in the Ships Colonies & Commerce series.  Only two pieces are known, both of which trace back to the W.W.C. Wilson sale of November 1925.  The present example was purchased by L.A. Langstroth, who shortly afterward showed it to W.A.D. Lees.  Lees incorporated it into his Ships Colonies & Commerce token list as number 5B.  Since the second known Br-1000 is at the A.N.S. in New York, the Robins example is the only one in private hands.

Ex. W.W.C. Wilson collection (Wayte Raymond, Nov. 1925, lot 635, Ex. L.A. Langstroth collection, Ex. John McKay-Clements collection (Frank Rose, May 1976, lot 616).
