Description
One of 50 Known Specimens
George V gold Sovereign 1916-C MS64 PCGS, Ottawa mint, KM20,
S-3997, Marsh-224 (R5). Arguably the most famed rarity of the
short-lived Canadian Sovereign series. Despite having the second
lowest recorded mintage, it is thought that the majority of the
6,119 examples struck in 1916 were remelted; collectors will be
familiar with this common fate encountered by many of the WWI era
Sovereigns used in international repayments. As such, it is now
postulated that only 50 examples of the 1916-C are still extant.
Not just representing a type rarity, the present offering is
exceptionally preserved in near-gem state, pristine and level
surfaces showcasing full mint bloom, fully struck to even the most
intricate details. Just two coins have been more highly certified
by either NGC or PCGS. The last of this type in MS64 we handled
achieved a hammer price of $34,000 at our April 2015 auction, and
we do not doubt the rarity and eye appeal of this selection will
elicit similar bidder excitement. From the Caranett Collection of Sovereigns - #1 PCGS Registry Sets
